PostSubject: Costuming Ideas   Costuming Ideas Icon_minitimeSat Feb 14, 2009 5:31 pm

So, I'd love to put together some cool costumes for this game, including trying to organize semi-regulation uniforms for those characters still in the navy, or those just wanting to don their military garb again.

I've been browsing some sites and have found a couple of ideas. This is directly lifted from Battlestar Galactica: http://www.aradanicostumes.com/article_battlestar_galactica.php
, but the utilitarian look is pretty cool.

I think the main colors are going to be black and grey for the navy folks. Obviously, if your character isn't serving any more or never did, you're not obligated.

If everyone wants to get in on it, however, we can say that Isely has issued at least some guidelines as to the dress-code.

Regardless, it'll be fun to get gussied up sci-fi style.

What do y'all think?

I absolutely love this idea. Smile

Are these things that we (cough, my loving and adoring wife) can make, or do we have a replica/costume website to purchase from?

That's what we need to discuss - personally, I'm more for making stuff than buying (as bad as I am about sewing shit), even if it's just us getting regular black shirts and grey pants, and then making adornments or accessories.

The world itself is halfway between Star Trek and Firefly as far as style goes - the Global Armed Forces are only a decade or so old, so while there ARE uniforms, they're not as pristine as they could be.

I do know that everyone is going to have some Isely logo somewhere on their person, as it would've been insisted upon by the company the expedition is representing. This could be a patch, a button, a name tag, dog tags, anything.

Hmm.

Dragonfire laser crafts does dogtags for the Cam... if you've got an image, they should be able to burn it onto some dogtags. Smile

I've always liked the undershirt - outer jacket thing, the kind with the ability to unbutton the upper right section? Random, I know. I can't sew, so I can't really chime in on that, though if there's a place we can buy something that's not too expensive, I'm down for chipping in cash.

I do, however, forsee wearing my beaten up combat boots and getting picked on for them in character. Wink

Any particular style you'd like for unity?

I kinda like this one. It seems more fitted, but that just may be the pose: http://www.militaryclothing.com/IBS/SimpleCat/Product/asp/hierarchy/0E/product-id/525193.html

The others look baggy.

I'm going to ask Gogas to deisgn a logo for Isely, and we can maybe use it on the costumes somehow, too.

Dragonfire can put the log on anythng too. So either dog tags or buttons that can be put on the uniforms might work.

I'm also all for making. We have several weeks still so if we maybe want to do a get together night to work on pieces for this I"m cool with that.

Craft night would be awesome. It would likely just be you and Jake and me and Droo (unless Gogas got excited and wanted to come, too), since Josh is in Tampa and Kyle and Matt are in another state. But we could get input from them before we started making stuff.

Well, if a final design is decided upon, I think I can get Grandma to make Matt's and mine. If not, we could look at some Army Surplus stores.

That's also an idea - we could find a pattern we like and use it all around.

Basically, my thought is to have the costumes kinda like school uniforms in movies- they may be the same basic design or color or style, but each character would wear them differently, accessorize them, customize them, etc.

Maybe even just havig matching jackets...

I had an idea - what if we just made the collective costume piece a jacket? That way we'd all have something to wear that was marginally uniform-ish, but people could wear whatever they wanted under it. Military would have something simple like a black tee and pants or the like, and eveyone else could just go with whatever.

We could have a crafts night to fix up the jackets with logos or designs.

Thoughts?

Okay, yeah. That could work. And we could sort of customize our other clothing? Either way, Matt and I could go to Goodwill or somesuch and buy a couple jackets, maybe some overall-y type of gear.

I'm SO STOKED!

Actually, since we want the jackets to match, we should buy them all for the same place.

Wal-Mart seems to have the best, plain, non-nylon jacket. Plus, it comes in multiple colors.

Yeah, I think that's doable. Do you want us all to have the same color, maybe tan/brown?

I guess we'll just end up putting it to a vote. Or having the military characters have one color and the civilians another?

I'd be down with that. What about patches? Would we be able to customize our jackets, like, putting on a patch for fighting in the Battle of the Aurelias Cloud or somesuch?

Yeah, like I said earlier - I'd like to have a craft night where we customize the jackets. If you want to do your own while you're up north, feel free. Or you can just tell me what you want on it and I'll work on it during the craft night.

This is a really neat site: http://www.usmilitarystuff.com/

It has patches and ranking pins and all sorts of neato stuff.

Those of us with a more...shall we say, husky? frame are kind of limited in what they can get as far as cheap jackets or uniforms. But I was thinking I might be able to score an old white doctor's coat, or something. Could that work?

I think that's a great idea. Would you be agreeable to putting Isely or GAF patches and such on it?
